Who Are We? What Do We Believe? We are a non-denominational church that seeks unity among God's people. We believe that Christians should lay aside the traditions of men and go back to the church described in the New Testament. We are a part of "The Restoration Movement." We want to unite with others around the essentials of the Scriptures. A phrase developed through this movement is "In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, and in all things love." What do we believe? President James A Garfield, our twentieth president, lived and died a member of the Christian Church, and was for some years a preacher in the church. He was once requested to formulate a statement which would give a more definite idea of our position in matters of faith. Here it is: 1. We call ourselves Christians. We do not claim to be the only Christians, but we want to be Christians only. 2. We believe in God the Father. 3. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and our Savior. We regard the divinity of Christ as the fundamental truth of the Christian system. 4. We believe in the Holy Spirit, both as to His agency in conversion and as a dweller in the heart of the Christian. 5. We accept the Old and New Testaments as the inspired Word of God. 6. We believe in the future punishment of the wicked (hell) and the future reward of the righteous (heaven). 7. We believe that Deity is a prayer-hearing and prayer-answering God. 8. We observe the institution of the Lord's Supper every Lord's Day. To this Table we neither invite nor debar. It is his table. (If you have accepted Jesus as Lord you are welcome to partake of communion.) 9. We plead for the union of God's people. 10. The Bible is our only discipline. (The Bible alone is our reference and guide for life decisions.) 11. We maintain that all ordinances should be observed as they were in the days of the apostles. (Among those ordinances are marriage, communion, tithing.) Return to topA BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHURCH The church was called into existence A.D. 30, on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of CHRIST. The book of Acts record those early beginnings. Thayer Christian Church comes from the root of the Restoration Movement which began around 1830. This local congregation traces it’s roots to 1872. We are an autonomous New Testament Church accepting the Bible as the divinely inspired word of GOD and seek to live according to the principles contained therein. We accept baptism by immersion, communion on a weekly basis and encourage stewardship and faithfulness always. Our members are taught to follow I Peter 3:15; "But in your hearts set apart CHRIST as LORD. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect..." The eternal home is described in Revelation 21:3; "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of GOD is with men, and HE will live with them. They will be HIS people, and GOD HIMSELF will be with them and be their GOD." MAKING THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION OF LIFE: As one understands the supernatural power of the universe as the sovereign GOD they have begun the road to salvation and the promise of eternal life. Romans 3:23; "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of GOD," is easy to understand as we examine human history and our current condition. John 3:16 reminds us; "For GOD so loved the world that HE gave HIS one and only SON, that whoever believes in HIM shall not perish but have eternal life." Then Ephesians 2:8; For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of GOD---" Romans 10:9-11; "That if you confess with your mouth ‘JESUS is LORD,’ and believe in your heart that GOD raised HIM from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, ‘Anyone who trusts in HIM will never be put to shame.’" When you hear and believe the Gospel message (good news about JESUS), repent of your sins, confess that JESUS is the SON of GOD and be baptized (Romans 6:1-7 describes baptism for the believer) you have entered the journey of eternal life as GOD has taught in the Bible.
